Purpose: Established in 1953, the Marshall Scholarship Program gives high ability young Americans the opportunity to study at any university the United Kingdom. The Program was created to honor the ideals of the Marshall Plan, and foster appreciation of the U.K. among future American leaders.
Award: The Scholarship covers tuition and fees, airfare, living expenses, and related expenses such as books, for two years of study in any discipline leading to a graduate degree at a British university. (The Marshall Commission does not fund second BA degrees or MBA degrees.) Third-year extensions are granted by the Commission on a limited basis. Up to 40 scholarships are awarded each year.
Eligibility
- U.S. citizen
- GPA ≥ 3.7
- Senior or recent graduate (after April 2004)
- Attain bachelor’s degree before scholarship begins
- Not have studied for, or hold a degree or degree equivalent from a British university
Selection Criteria
- Academic ability
- Leadership, service
- Motivation and seriousness of purpose
- Potential in chosen field of study
- Strong detailed letters of recommendation; good essay with rationale for study in the U.K.
Application Process: Applicants should plan to attend an informational meeting in September or April of their junior year, and begin work on the application the summer before the application deadline. In September, the campus committee reviews applications, interviews strong applicants and endorses top candidates. Applications of endorsed candidates are sent to the regional level of competition in October. The regional committees interview finalists and select scholars in early to mid-November.
