Purpose: Established in 1959, the Winston Churchill Foundation offers American students of exceptional accomplishment the opportunity to study mathematics, engineering, or the sciences at the graduate level, at Cambridge University. American friends of Winston Churchill created the foundation in order to fulfill Churchill’s wish of having American graduate students at Churchill College at the University of Cambridge.

Award: The scholarship covers all College and University tuition and fees for one year of graduate study in at Churchill College, Cambridge University. Students also receive a living stipend as well as an allowance of up to $1,000.00 for travel to the United Kingdom. At least 13 scholarships are made available annually.

Eligibility

  • U.S. citizen
  • GPA ≥ 3.7
  • Senior or a recent graduate, between the ages of 19 and 26
  • Attain a bachelor’s degree before scholarship begins
  • May not have earned a doctorate

Selection Criteria

  • Outstanding academic achievement in all disciplines, but especially in the major
  • Ability to contribute to mathematics, engineering, or the sciences
  • Graduate Record Examination Scores
  • Outstanding personal qualities

Application Process: To be considered for nomination, submit a completed application to the UAA Office by the campus deadline. In September, the campus committee reviews applications, interviews top applicants, and endorses two candidates. Endorsed candidates may revise their application before submitting nationally in November; they must apply separately for admission to the University of Cambridge no later than mid-October. Churchill finalists will be announced in early January and interviewed by phone in mid-January. Scholars are announced in February/March.

Application Submission: One copy of application materials, including supporting materials, must arrive at the UAA Office by 4:30 p.m. on the day of the campus deadline. It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that all letters of recommendation are received by the campus deadline. For the campus competition, recommenders may email letters to awards@provost.wisc.edu (a signed letter on letterhead is needed for the national competition). For the campus competition, applicants may submit an unofficial UW–Madison transcript (student record available through MyUW); transcripts from other universities must be official.
