Purpose: The Beinecke Scholarship Program was established in 1971 to provide scholarships for the graduate education of young men and women of exceptional promise. Originally open to students attending graduate school in all disciplines, in 1998 the board decided to limit eligibility for the award to students planning to pursue a PhD or terminal master’s degree in the arts, humanities and social sciences.

Award: Each scholar receives $2,000 immediately prior to entering graduate school and an additional $30,000 while attending any accredited graduate school. Recipients are allowed to supplement the scholarship with other awards, and must utilize all of the funding within five years of completion of undergraduate studies. Approximately 20 scholarships are awarded each year.

Eligibility

  • Academic ability (above 3.7 GPA recommended)
  • Apply as Junior (one year left)
  • Plan to pursue terminal master's or PhD in arts/humanities/social sciences
  • US citizen or US national
  • Eligible for need-based financial aid during undergrad years (institutional, state or federal grants-in-aid)

Selection Criteria: A selection committee will review all proposals.

  • Academic ability and achievement
  • Personal promise
  • Financial need (preference “given to candidates for whom the awarding of a scholarship would increase the likelihood of the student's being able to attend graduate school.”)

Application Process
Applicants must submit a Campus Beinecke Application to the UW–Madison selection committee. In January, the UW selection committee reviews applications and endorses one candidate. The endorsed candidate completes the official Beinecke application which includes an application form, 1,000-word essay, resume, transcripts, and 3 letters of recommendation. The official Beinecke application is due in March and the announcement of scholars is made in May.

Submit application to: Beinecke Scholarship Committee, c/o Undergraduate Academic Awards Office, Room 271 Bascom Hall, 500 Lincoln Drive, Madison, WI 53706.
