Andrew W. Mellon New Directions FellowshipsJune 21, 2006 TO: Deans, Directors, and Department Chairs FROM: Patrick Farrell, Provost RE: Andrew W. Mellon New Directions Fellowships The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has invited the University of Wisconsin-Madison to nominate two outstanding faculty members for the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation New Directions Fellowships. The purpose of the program is to provide support for faculty members in the humanities and humanistic social sciences who would benefit from acquiring systematic training outside their own disciplines. Candidates are to be between five and 15 years from receiving their Ph.D. Those named will receive the equivalent of one year’s academic salary, two summers of additional support at the equivalent of two-ninths of the previous academic year salary, and tuition and other reasonable costs associated with the fellows’ training. In 2004, Nicole Huang in the Department of East Asian Languages and Literature at UW-Madison was selected by the Mellon Foundation to receive an award. The principle criteria for the awards are 1) the overall significance of the research, 2) the case for the importance of extra-disciplinary training for furthering the research, 3) the likely ability of the candidate to derive satisfactory results, and 4) the submission of a well-developed plan for acquiring the necessary training within a reasonable period of time. Mellon will select approximately ten (10) New Directions Fellows by March 2007. If you would like to be considered as a candidate or nominate a candidate, please send the nomination information to Laurie Beth Clark in 117 Bascom Hall, or via e-mail to lbclark@wisc.edu. The packet of information should contain the following materials:
Nomination materials are due in the Provost’s Office by September 1, 2006. A committee of senior faculty in the relevant disciplines will review the nominations and select two to be forwarded to the Mellon Foundation. Please see the attached document for further information. If you have any questions, please contact Laurie Beth Clark at lbclark@wisc.edu. |
