Purpose: Established in 1953, the Marshall Scholarship Program gives high ability young Americans the opportunity to study at any university in the United Kingdom. The Program was created to honor the ideals of the Marshall Plan, and foster appreciation of the U.K. among future American leaders.
Award: The Scholarship covers tuition and fees, airfare, living expenses, and related expenses such as books, for two years of study in any discipline leading to a graduate degree at a British university. (The Marshall Commission does not fund second BA degrees or MBA degrees.) Third-year extensions are granted by the Commission on a limited basis. Up to 40 scholarships are awarded each year.
Eligibility
- U.S. citizen
- GPA ≥ 3.7
- Senior or recent graduate (may apply up to two years after graduating)
- Attain bachelor’s degree before scholarship begins
- Not have studied for, or hold a degree or degree equivalent from a British university
Selection Criteria
- Distinction of intellect (scholastic attainments)
- Distinction of character (leadership, service)
- Potential to make a significant contribution to society
- Strong motivation and seriousness of purpose
- Presentation of a specific and realistic academic program of study in the UK
Application Process: To be considered for nomination, submit an online application, available at http://www.marshallscholarship.org/, by the campus deadline. (Please note that there are separate applications for the one-year and two-year Marshall Scholarships. Applicants may apply for one or the other, but not both.) The campus committee reviews applications and endorses top candidates. Endorsed candidates may revise application materials before submitting to the regional level of competition in October. The regional committees interview finalists and select scholars in early to mid-November.
Application Submission: Online applications must be submitted electronically by 4:30 p.m.on the day of the campus deadline. It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that all letters of recommendation have been submitted by the campus deadline. If you are also applying for a Rhodes Scholarship, you may use your Rhodes letters of recommendation for the Marshall campus application process. (You can enter recommenders' information on the Marshall application but don't click the send button until/unless you receive campus nomination.) Additionally, applicants must submit a transcript from each college attended. For the campus competition, applicants may submit an unofficial UW-Madison transcript (student record available through MyUW); transcripts from other universities must be official. Hardcopy materials must be received by the campus deadline, and sent to:
