UW-Madison Assessment Council
CAMPUS-BASED ASSESSMENT PLANNING RESOURCES
During the last year, a number of campus-based organizations have been instrumental in
assisting departments in developing appropriate assessment programs and methodologies for
assessing student learning in the major. The institution has made some funds available for using
the services of these organizations. Departments should work with their Assessment Council
member to obtain these resources.
Testing and Evaluation (T & E)
Testing and Evaluation has worked with numerous departments including French and Italian,
German, Spanish and Portuguese, Mathematics, and Electrical Engineering to devise tests and
methods for collecting essential data used for analyzing the effectiveness of courses and student
progression. They have also worked with both the Quantitative Reasoning and the
Communication General Education Committees to assist in student placement determination.
Finally T & E successfully assisted the School of Education to develop an alumni survey and
Mechanical Engineering to design a survey for graduating seniors surveys.
Learning through Evaluation and Dissemination (LEAD)
The Learning through Evaluation and Dissemination (LEAD) Center has provided support in
developing student assessment activities in a variety of departments. During 1996-97, the
LEAD Center assisted in collecting assessment data from students, faculty, and alumni in order
to facilitate programmatic improvement. Departments using LEAD's assistance during the last
year include Mechanical Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Industrial
Engineering, Botany, Math 141 (QRA)
University of Wisconsin Survey Center (UWSC)
The University of Wisconsin Survey Center (UWSC) has been very active in assisting
departments and the university in developing student surveys to measure student achievement
and satisfaction. Since 1993 UWSC has worked with faculty and administrators to conduct a
campus-wide survey of undergraduate student satisfaction. During the 1996-97 year, UWSC
conducted a pilot alumni survey and is initiated preliminary discussions about developing a
larger, more comprehensive alumni survey.
Creating a Collaborative Learning Environment (CCLE)
Creating a Collaborative Learning Environment (CCLE) has worked with a variety of faculty to
improve teaching and student learning on campus. CCLE interacts closely with faculty to
create collaborative dialogue that focuses on student learning and the use of assessment
feedback.
Office of Quality Improvement (OQI)
The Office of Quality Improvement (OQI) assists departments with designing assessment
processes and particularly to help faculty identify desired student learning outcomes. OQI
stresses using assessment processes as a tool to link student learning to future strategic and
curricular planning.
